IN 1989 a Buckingham disco band were picked to perform at Butlins for the summer season.
The five piece band Hotline struck a high note when they auditioned for the Minehead spot and were picked from 40 other groups.
The band had toured the general club circuit at Reading, Oxford, Corby and Buckingham, and hoped to be playing abroad in the future.
Hotline started their season in April 1989 at Minehead Summer West World camp playing live music six nights a week until the end of October.
The band consisted of Ian Murray on lead guitar and sax, his wife Jenny who was lead singer, Philip McKee on drums, Andy McKee on base and Jerry Price-Starky on keyboard.

  • STRATTON Audley is loud in the singing of the praises of those figures in the heroic efforts which saved the lives of five children who fell through the ice of the fishpond in that village on Friday week last. A letter of thanks has been written to the ladies and gentlemen of the skating party from Tingewick and Water Stratford, who were responsible for the plucky action.

  • WE are pleased to state that electric call-bells have been fitted in the houses of the members of the Buckingham Fire Brigade, and that a fire alarm box has been inserted by the side of the entrance to the Engine-house, at the Old Gaol, so that it is only necessary in case of fire to break the glass and pull the lever, when the electric bells will sound in the houses of all the firemen.


  • 50 YEARS AGO
  • OF the Buckingham banking houses, Barclays is the first to be able to offer Night Safe facilities. This week two fitters from Chubb's have installed the safe outside the bank. Mr G E Webb, manager of Barclays, told the Buckingham Advertiser that customers would be able to avail themselves of the service on Monday next and said the charge is five guineas per year.

  • FIVE hundred children up to 12 years of age in Buckingham County Secondary and Primary schools are to receive an Easter gift in the form of a decorated money box from Buckingham Trustee Savings Bank. The box can contain over five shillings in pennies or over five pounds in sixpences.

  • TREMENDOUS holiday attraction - The most fabulous evening ever presented in Buckingham is being held on Easter Saturday, March 28, the Goya Ball at Buckingham Town Hall. The first 50 ladies admitted will each receive, absolutely free, a phial of Goya's exciting new 'Remember' perfume.

  • BRACKLEY'S British Olympic Appeal Fun Run took place on Sunday. It was a financial triumph for the organising Barckley and District Round Table who raised at least £5,000 to send both handicapped and able-bodied sportsmen to their appropriate Olympics.

  • MORETONVILLE Junior Football Club's under 12 and under 13 sides celebrated their club's 15th anniversary. The boys' club was formed back in 1969 as Bourtonville, but changesd their name in 1980 when they moved to two new pitches at Maids Moreton supplied by the local playing fields association.

  • MP for Buckingham. George Walden was woken at 6.15am on Monday morning by the BBC asking him to step into Arthur Scargill's shoes to review the day's newspapers for 'Breakfast Time. Mr Scargill had refused to cross a picket line to get to the studio.
