WITH the green and gold banner of the Padbury Benefit Society flying at their head bearing the motto 'United we stand, divided we fall', the annual Whit-Monday parade of the Society led by the Great Horwood Band, are seen marching through Padbury village in 1969, prior to attending the annual dinner of the Benefit Society in the Village Hall.
Calls were made at the Robin Hood, Blackbird, and New Inn public houses before the parade terminated.

  • ...A PUBLIC meeting will be held shortly in Buckingham Town Hall to find out if it is possible to provide the borough with a covered and heated swimming pool.

  • ...DESPITE the lingering effects of the 1968 foot-and-mouth epidemic and an extremely late spring, milk production has broken all records during the past year. Just 2,162 million gallons were produced in England and Wales which is one percent more than the total for the previous year.


  • 100 YEARS AGO
  • MAIDS Moreton Club Festival will be held on Whit Monday, as customary for a long number of years past. The Granborough Brass Band has been engaged and the holiday promises to equal in enjoyment many of its predecessors.

  • NEXT Thursday the Wesleyans are holding quite a field-day in Buckingham and Tingewick. The chapel in the latter place has been renovated at a cost of £80, and it will be reopened by Mrs Carter.

  • WITH bacon rising in price it is satisfactory to learn that pig-feeding is again becoming more profitable. Last Saturday, five pigs were placed in Buckingham auction market by Mr Newton (Master of the Workhouse) and they realised 50s. 6d. each, whilst only five weeks previously he had purchased them in the same market at 27s. 6d. each.

  • FOLLOWING reports about the proposals for the closing of a number of unremunerative branch lines, Mr David Blee, General Manager of the London Midland Region, British Railways, has confirmed that a number of services and stations are under consideration for closure in 1959. These include a number in or just outside, the London Division.

  • ON Saturday, May 10, 25 young people of the Pilot Companies of the Tingewick Congregational Churches made a journey to London for the occasion of the Annual Children's Rally of the London Missionary Society.

  • DRIVING a 1934 E.R.A. in the 10 lap race for Pre-war racing cars at Goodwood on Whit. Monday, Mr Douglas H Hull, who owns a garage at Finmere, won at a speed of 79.69 mph.


  • 25 YEARS AGO
  • AFTER the flooding of several parts of Buckingham in 1979, the Anglian Water Authority made a promise to the people of Buckingham that all reasonable steps would be taken to prevent the recurrence of the river breaking its banks. Town councillors were informed of a £250,000 plus scheme to keep the waters away from town doors.

  • SINCE 1788 the Greyhound Friendly Society have celebrated Oak Apple Day in Marsh Gibbon with a day full of eating, drinking, marching, music and lots of fun. This year was no exception, with 160 people sitting down to a feast in the village hall.

  • TOWCESTER Rotaract Club is official - members have received their Charter from Towcester Rotary President, Mr Jon Matheson, in a ceremony at Towcester Town Hall. Six other local Rotaract clubs were present, including Brackley.
