AFTER 35 years of treating all creatures great and small, Brackley's very own James Herriott decided it was time to step down.
In May, 1988, around 150 friends, clients and colleagues held a surprise reception at the town's Crown Hotel to mark the official retirement of David Watt from partnership in the local practice of Watt and Waite.
But Mr Watt continued at The Croft veterinary centre in Banbury Road as a consultant for the next few years.

Also in 1988:
  • ...ANOTHER page was written in Towcester's history on Monday when Cllr Stan Watson was proclaimed Mayor in the town's first ever Mayor-Making ceremony.

  • ...HRH The Duke of Gloucester was the guest of honour at Stowe School last Thursday, marking the centenary of the birth of John Ferguson Roxburgh, the first headmaster.

  • ...CHILDREN at Glory Farm School, Bicester, will be seeing their school double in size over the coming two years. Building work to provide much needed new accommodation is due to start in the autumn.

  • THE Oxford Steamer and Kingston Steamers begin their daily excursions on May 24. These steamers have now been running for 21 years, and their popularity has increased with every season. The Great Western Railway, London & South Western Railway, and Messrs. Thos.Cook and Sons book numerous circular tours in connection with this service, thus giving facilities to tourists to take long or short trips over the 90 miles of the river served by the Steamers.

  • THE newly-formed Bletchley and Fenny Stratford United Football Club is getting well to work. A suitable playing ground has been secured, headquarters have been arranged for, and matters put in train for enrolment in, and affiliation to, the Association and Leagues.

  • BUCKINGHAM Athletic Football Club was formed twenty-five years ago and during the whole of that period Mr C H Bray has been the Honorary Treasurer. On Saturday, at the Club's annual dinner, held in the Elfril Sports Club room, Buckingham, Mr Bray was presented with a combined barometer, thermometer and hygrometer.

  • THE Buckingham Rural Road Accident Committee are holding a Motor Car Rally organised by the Buckingham & District Motor Club, on Sunday, May 31, 1959 at 2.30pm. Competitors to assemble in North End Square, Buckingham where entries will be taken - no entry fee. Cup for winner
and plaque for second and third, open to everyone.

  • THE Brackley and District Band's success saga of waltzing off with every trophy on offer, continued on Sunday, when the Band won the two cups for the top class in a prestigious entertainment competition. Staged at Abbey Hall, Abingdon, the contest was organised by the Oxford and District Brass Band Association.

  • BRACKLEY Town Council has decided that the street running through the 'plots for sale' area at Pavillons Way, Brackley, should be named Flora Thompson Drive - despite worries that this might be shortened to Margarine Street.
