THERE was a great variety of attractions, as usual, at the annual sports and family day in June 1956 of the London Brick Company Ltd's Social & Sports Association of Calvert Works and employees and their wives and families spent a most enjoyable time.
There were free Punch and Judy shows, miniature railway rides and other amusements for children and a display by Bedford Boys' Club.
Excellent catering and transport arrangements had been made for this great family day out.
Also in 1956:
  • ...A PARTY of 20 National Savings workers and friends from Buckingham and District celebrated the Movement's 40th birthday by attending a party at Bletchley.

  • ...AT the North Bucks School Sports, Buckingham County Secondary School retained the Shield which they had already won for three years in succession.

  • ...£200, principally in pennies, have been raised by customers of the Mitre Inn, Buckingham, for Father Hudson's Homes in about nine years.


  • 100 YEARS AGO
  • TEN years ago the estimated number of letters sent from this country to the United States was 11,000,000. In 1902, five years later, the estimated number had grown to 13,000,000, and last year it reached 20,000,000.

  • A GRAND Gymkhana will be held in Shelswell Park on Monday, August 3, in aid of the Training Fund for Cottage Nurses. Prizes will be given for Decorated Pony Carts, Coster's Carts and Barrows, Ladies' and Gent's Bicycles.

  • AT Brackley Town Council meeting it was resolved that the Council ask the County Council to apply a 10mph limit for motor cars within the limits of the Great Central Railway Station, the Gas Works, the Workhouse, and the last house in Halse Road.


  • 50 YEARS AGO
  • AS Part of the County Council scheme affecting 11 Bucks Fire Brigades, both the existing fire-fighting appliances at Winslow are to be replaced with one of the latest type.

  • THE Clean Air Act, 1956, which received the Royal Assent on July 5th, 1956, came fully into force on Sunday last, June 1st. The Act prohibits the emission of dark smoke from any chimney except during certain limited periods when dark smoke may be unavoidable as a result of such operations as cleaning fires.

  • WHEN the Stony Stratford Baptists celebrated their 301st Church Anniversary on Sunday last, all the services were taken by the Rev R J Walker.


  • 25 YEARS AGO

    • A START on the building of a new and much-needed primary school in Towcester is likely to be delayed due to problems over the compulsory purchase of land from Abbey Homes. Funds set aside for the project in this financial year have now been re-allocated and Towcester's scheme will now be the top priority scheme for 1984-85.

    • THE 1st Silverstone Boys Brigade completed a 50-hour table tennis marathon last Thursday. Organised by BB officer Andrew Payne, the effort raised an estimated £140 for the 1st BB funds.

    • BOMB disposal experts safely exploded an anti-tank missile in Evenley last week. The 40-year-old PIAT (Projector Infantry Anti-Tank) missile was found by a Mixbury farmer when he went to round up sheep on Thursday morning.
