IN November 1964, on a misty, typically autumnal day, the remodelled nine-hole Golf Course, the first completed project of the Stowe 40th Anniversary Development Appeal, was opened.
Golf was always regarded as part of the curriculum at Stowe, and the nine-hole course, measuring 2,151 yards, had been redesigned on the lower reaches of the grounds, more or less covering the original course laid out in 1924, soon after the school was founded.
Wing Commander P. B. ("Laddie") Lucas, D.S.O., D.F.C., probably Stowe's most distinguished golfer, and, then president of the Golf Foundation, introduced five of England's most famous players - Bernard Hunt, leading British professional in the 1964 Open Championships at St Andrews; John Jacobs, a British International player widely known as "Dr Golf"; Miss Pamela Tredinnick, 1964 British Girls' Champion; Miss Shirley Ward, English Girls' Champion; and Peter Townsend, British Boys' Match Champion.
The Course Architect was Mr C.K.Cotton, and the Turf Consultant Mr I.G.Lewis.
They must be proud of what has been called "the best private golf facilities of any school in the land."
