WITH every over counting for the starving of Ethiopia, members of the Buckingham Junior Cricket Club managed to avoid any sticky wickets when they raised about £170 during a weekend in September 1985 with two days of sponsored cricket.
About 27 took part in the event, held at the Buckingham Cricket Club ground along Bourton Road, Buckingham.

100 Yeras Ago:

  • BUCKINGHAM Great Sheep Fair will be held today, Saturday, when some few thousands of sheep will be offered for sale. This is one of the largest and best sheep fairs in the whole district.

  • DURING today, Saturday, a collection will be made in Buckingham market by ladies in aid of the funds of the Nursing Home, and in the evening a decorated cycle parade will be held in the meadows in High Street.

  • THE detachment of the 19th Hussars, consisting of 188 men and horses, which visited Buckingham in July on their way to Salisbury Plain, again visited Buckingham on their return journey to Weedon on Thursday last, and were billeted at the public houses for the night, resuming the march yesterday, Friday.



50 Years Ago:

  • FOURTEEN competitors took part in the Car Rally organised by Buckingham and District Motor Club and held on Sunday last over forty miles of difficult roads in the Chilterns.

  • "STANDING by a purpose true"...the words – the first line of the song Dare to be a Daniel – marked the opening of the 72nd Anniversary Celebrations of the Salvation Army in Buckingham on Saturday evening at a Festival of Music and Song at the Salvation Army Hall.

  • A RAINSTORM of almost tropical intensity, accompanied by heavy thunder and vivid lightning, burst over Buckingham late on Wednesday night and caused extensive damage to electricity power cables and corn crops.



25 Years Ago:

  • ADULT education fees are being pegged in Buckinghamshire this year – that means most people will again be paying £14.60 for most classes in a normal, ten-week term. Or 73p an hour, which is good value for money.

  • PC ALAN Brooks was a popular visitor to the Holiday Play Scheme run so successfully at Well Street School during August. He checked bikes to make sure they were roadworthy and used the police cycle-marking technique which has proved so successful in tracking down missing cycles.

  • THE Bell Tower Inn, High Street, Brackley, is holding a Medieval Banquet on Thursday, October 6 from 8pm to 1am, admission by ticket only, to include live entertainment and a feast of roast meats; dress optional but medieval costume welcomed.
