IN December 1959, Mr Herbert Whitney, who had been Station Master at Buckingham for the previous four years, was presented with a gold wrist watch to commemorate 45 years service on the railway.
The presentation was made by the District Operating Superintendent, L.M.Region, British Railways, at a ceremony held at Euston Station, London.
Mr Whitney joined the railway service in 1914 at Kettering telegraph department.
He worked in Huntingdonshire, Leicestershire - where he first became a station master at East Langton in 1935 - and Northants before coming to Buckingham in January, 1956.
During the First World War Mr Whitney served as a Royal Engineer wireless operator in Egypt.

  • ...STOWE School Choir visited St John's Church, Wicken and rendered an excellent selection of Carols to a full church.

  • ...THERE were about 3,100,000 tons of potatoes in Great Britain on the 1st November last, according to the census taken by the Potato Marketing Board.

  • ...THERE were 70 most attractive exhibits at the Christmas Flower Festival organised by the Bucks Floral Art Group and held in the Public Hall, Winslow.



100 YEARS AGO


  • THE Rev. John Edward Tweed, for 41 years Vicar of Stratton Audley, near Bicester, has died at the age of 86, at Dulwich. He was ordained deacon in 1845, and priest the following year.

  • A STREET collection in connection with Dr Gregory's Home for Destitute and Crippled Children will be held on Saturday during the Cattle Fair.

  • AT one time the vergers were instructed to shoot the pigeons at St Paul's Cathedral to keep down their numbers. They were shot from the steps at the western front of the Cathedral, when the area in front of the steps was enclosed. But this was put a stop to 30 years ago.



50 YEARS AGO


  • IN the British Legion Clubroom, Sidney Smith, who was the United Kingdom Professional Billiards champion in 1947/48/49, took on one or two local challengers at snooker. He gave a demonstration of how to execute intricate billiards shots.
    Sidney was undeafeated at the time that Billiards championship matches were discontinued.

  • SWANBOURNE Women's Institute's 34th birthday party was held in the Infant School.
    Each member invited a friend and two members from each Institute in the Chase Group - Mursley, Great Horwood, Little Horwood, Drayton Parslow and Stewkley - were also present.



25 YEARS AGO


  • FOOTPATH followers in Winslow have been puzzled by the appearance of a public footpath sign directing them straight across the town's allotments, on the Buckingham Road. It turns out the sign was incorrectly sited by a Highways Authority employer.

  • A TEAM of workmen went into action this week demolishing the ancient stone wall which for nearly 180 years has shielded pedestrians from traffic in Bridge Street, Buckingham.

  • PAY and Display parking is on its way to Buckingham. With the promise of a new car park alongside the proposed community centre, long suffering motorists will have to pay for the overdue privilege of easier parking both there and at Bridge Street.
