PICTURED here are some of the members of Padbury's Sick Benefit Society in 1968, outside the Robin Hood public house, during a welcome pause in their traditional Whit Monday parade through the village.
Led by the Great Horwood Band and carrying the green and gold banner of the society, stops for refreshments were also made at the New Inn and the Blackbird.
The parade finished at the village hall where the annual Benefit Society dinner was held.

Also in 1968:
  • ...A SWARM of bees descended on a small bush in busy West Street, Buckingham, at lunchtime on Tuesday, causing something of a dislocation of pedestrian traffic as people tried to avoid the buzzing black mass of insects.

  • ...WINSLOW Scouts swept the board on the Buckingham District cycle touring competition when they took the first and second awards in both the under 14 years of age and over 14 and up to 16 years of age.

  • ...A NEW street leading off Church Lane, Whaddon, is to be named Old Manor Close in view of the fact that excavations revealed what appeared to be the foundations of the old Manor House.

  • A NOTABLE figure at Adstock Club Festival is Mrs Hannah Smith, who for over 70 years has had a stall of sweets and confectionery at the entrance to the orchard in the village where the festivities are held. Though in her 98th year she still occupied the same position on Monday last. She is a native of the village and has lived in it all her life.

  • THERE is an unlimited supply of milk in London at present, the demand not being equal to it. Price about 7d a gallon.

  • MEMBERS of the Padbury Benefit Society proved the truth of their motto - "United we stand, divided we fall" when they celebrated the Society's 101st anniversary last weekend.

  • "BIG bulk supplies of polio vaccine arrived last week and we have ample now to deal with all the children in the North Bucks area," Dr D H Waldron told members of the Buckingham Rural District Council at their meeting on Tuesday.

  • IS television rapidly becoming the main form of entertainment throughout the country? Obviously it will never oust football and other sports, but in very many ways television programmes are having an adverse effect on whist drives, fetes and similar events.

  • BRACKLEY Motors, believed to be the oldest motor trade business in the country to be trading from its original premises, is up for sale at an asking price of £285,000. Brackley Motors' service director Mr John Dale has worked for the company 40 years since starting as a petrol attendant as a schooleaver before World War II.

  • ST MICHAEL'S Church, Steeple Claydon, now locked up after the discovery of a dangerous roofing fault which will cost £35,000 to repair, is to be saved but will take some doing. At a public meeting at Steeple Claydon's Allan Shaw Combined School over 100 people raised their hands in support of trying to find the money for repairs.

  • BRONNLEYS of Brackley - whose slogan is "Makers of the Best Soaps in the World" - celebrate 100 years in business next week.
