OVER 100 forlorn red telephone boxes stood in an isolated field near Buckingham before being sold to collectors or speculators looking to cash in on a huge demand for them in USA.
The boxes had been removed from sites around North Bucks, South Northants and North Oxfordshire in April 1988 by BT as part of the updating programme.
Red phone boxes first appeared back in 1936.
Under BT's modernisation programme, all except 200 of them are doomed to suffer the same fate as the pound note, fish and chips in newspaper and the BBC Home Service.
