THIS week's Days Gone By shows pupils of Chandos Middle School, Buckingham, pictured on board the Portuguese fishing boat 'Sotero' during a visit to the Maritime Museum at Exeter in 1983.
The then headmaster, Mr W T Benson, took the children along to the museum, part of the activities of their educational holiday at Minehead.
The museum had over 100 boats from all over the world, and the children were allowed to climb about and explore the larger areas, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
The museum closed in 1997.
Also from the Advertiser & Review in 1983:
  • ...OUTLINE planning permission has been sought to turn the 11.3 acre site of Brackley's former Great Central Station into a general and light industrial estate.

  • ...A STAGGERING £19,050 has been written off by Bucks County Council as a consequence of thefts reported from its schools over a six month period to March this year.

  • ...PATRIOTISM was alive and well in Winslow on Sunday as Cub Scouts, Scouts, and Venture Scouts marched in the annual St George's Day parade down the High Street to the Parish Church.

  • MUCH annoyance has been caused to the parishioners of Oving by the removal of the antique sundial which graced the churchyard. Whether done from wanton mischief or as a matter of robbery (the sundial being a valuable one) is not known but the probability is that some tramp wrenched it off its pillar and took it away.

  • THE "runaway" train has been the chief topic of conversation in the Buckingham district during the week. Certainly too much praise cannot possibly be bestowed on Brakesman James Bates, whose courage, coolness, presence of mind, and prompt action, undoubtedly averted a catastrophe, as it is a single line both on reaching and passing Buckingham Station.

  • A NATIONWIDE scheme of driving instruction and traffic education for teenagers has been launched and the comprehensive course consists of nine hours classroom instruction and 30 hours group driving tuition. Officially described as The RAC Junior Driver course in Driver and Traffic Education, the scheme is intended for girls and boys aged about 16.

  • THREE farms in Great Horwood, Newton Longville and Tingewick, comprising a total of 700 acres, are to be sold with many other agricultural properties owned by the Warden and Scholars of New College, Oxford. The 3,500 acres involved represents about 25 percent of College holdings.

  • TOWCESTER Studio Band have won their valuable prize in the Band's 74-year history - in the Pontins Brass Band Easter Championships at Hemsby-on-Sea, Norfolk, on Easter Sunday they took second place in their section to win £250.

  • THE six-strong darts team from the Swan Inn, Great Horwood, have proved themselves unbeatable by winning every one of the 18 games played in the Winslow Darts League during the winter competition season. The team consists of Joe Bradley, Stan Stones, John O'Neil, Bobby Ridgway, Peter Bradley and Mark Hogston.

  • THE official opening and handing over of Buckingham's new Community Centre will take place at noon tomorrow, Friday, April 28.
