A CHURCH in Bicester is to begin its £1million fundraising campaign this weekend with entertainment and fun in the church grounds.
St Edburg's Church in Bicester town centre is raising the money to remodel the interior so that it can better serve the 21st century Bicester community.

The campaign was launched last month, by soldiers from the Pioneer Regiment abseiling from the top of the bell tower, to release the campaign banner.

The fete is just one of the events scheduled to happen during the year and it kicks off at 10am on Saturday, with stalls, games, a bouncy castle, refreshments and a barbecue.

Entertaining the guests for the day is the Marsh Gibbon Silver Band.
St Edburg's has been a central feature of the landscape and character of the town for generations. The church celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2004.

The modernisation plan will see the removal of the church pews to create a flexible community space more suitable for worship and other events like concerts and exhibitions.

New audio visual equipment will be installed, but the sweeping Norman arches, historic stained glass windows and curious stone carvings will all remain.

Some essential maintenance work to the building will also be carried out.
