BICESTER'S leisure centre is set to re-open by Monday (12/05) after the initial phase of a £25millon modernisation programme is completed.
The money will be spent on Cherwell Valley's three sports centres and the Bicester and Ploughley Sport Centre in Queen's Avenue will see big changes including a six-lane ten-pin bowling alley.
Bicester's complex has been closed since April 28 for pre-construction work. It should reopen on Monday, or earlier if possible.
Over the next 12 months, phased improvements will include better wet and dry changing rooms, a new health spa, a new creche and two new exercise studios. The front of the sports centre will also get a face-lift, and the car park will be improved.
The changes come as management of the sports centres passes from Cherwell District Council to the private company, Cherwell Leisure Ltd, a subsidary of Parkwood Project Management Ltd (PPM).
PPM director, Jeremy Lightfoot, said: "We are committed to improving health and leisure opportunities for local residents and look forward to working in partnership with the council to enhance sporting provision in the area."
Ian Davies, CDC strategic director for environment and community, said: "Obviously there will be some disruption to services, but we will endeavour to keep these to a minimum. Regular updates will be issued to keep users informed during the building programme."
The modernisation plan also includes upgrades to Kidlington Sports Centre, as well as a new sports centre in Banbury.
