A PELICAN crossing in Ambrosden, near Bicester, which was officially opened last week, has been given a thumbs-up.
The crossing, which has been installed in Ploughley Road, near Five Acres Primary School, is now in operation as part of the school's travel plan.

The school is one of the 71% of schools in Oxfordshire to sign up with Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) to have a travel plan which is designed to reduce unnecessary car use and open doors for funding of schemes like the pelican crossing.

Most pupils going to Five Acres walk to school and crossing Ploughley Road has been seen as a barrier to more pupils walking or cycling. The crossing was funded through the county council's Better Ways to School programme.

Michelle Jenkins, headteacher at the school, said: "We are very grateful to Oxfordshire County Council and its Better Ways to School programme for funding this new crossing. We want to encourage as many children as possible to walk, scoot or cycle."

MoD representatives attended the crossing's opening ceremony along with school and council representatives, as part of the crossing is on MoD land.
