Commuters travelling from Bicester North Station will find parking a bit easier this week after a £1.75million multi-deck extension to the car park was officially opened.
On Tuesday, Adrian Shooter, chairman of Chiltern Railways, drove a classic 1935 Ford V8 coupe down the ramp from the top deck of the new extension.
The previous capacity of the car park was 575, and the extension provides parking for an additional 160 cars.
The modular construction required eight-metre foundations and is made from steel and glass-reinforced plastic.
Alan Coakley is a senior project manager for Chiltern and has seen the Bicester car park extended four of times in the 12 years he has worked for the rail firm.
Mr Coakley said: "Given the situation that most station car parks are in, it is often difficult to build an extension while keeping passengers happy.
"This car park took around nine months to build from the original idea, through the tendering process and fabrication and it took just 20 days to construct.
"This technique is quite a revolution to me, you can put it up very quickly without much disruption to the car park."
Mr Coakley said The Chiltern main line is seeing a steady increase in passengers using the service many of whom live in rural area surrounding Bicester and must travel by car to reach the station.
He added: "We are seeing growth at all of our main stations along this route, so we know we providing a service people want to use. And they tend to vote with their feet so we need to make sure people can use our service when the want to."
Following the success of this project, Chiltern hopes to install similar car parks at some of its other stations.
