Jonathon Fenton, 22, was awarded the Mark Wilkinson Designers Award in the Domestic Greenclean category at this year's RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) Design Direction awards after designing the Bio Pod.
The air-tight kitchen-top storage container delays the decomposition of food waste and reduces unpleasant smells and health hazards.

The student awards scheme challenges young designers to respond to projects with a strong social context and intends them to question the role of the designer in the modern world.

Mr Fenton who is studying at Loughborough University said: "To have my design recognised in the RSA Design Direction awards is a real honour. The Bio Pod creates a hygienic, bacteria- and odour- free environment that encourages the user to recycle organic waste without having to empty the container daily."

Students from all over the country took part in the competition.
His design was among hundreds of others featured at Loughborough University's Industrial Design and Technology degree show at the University campus last month.
