BICESTER is preparing for two days of pomp and circumstance as a summer programme of community events gets underway on June 20.
Bicester's Proms in the Park is now in its 10th year and annually attracts up to 500 people to the town's Garth Park.
From around 7.30pm on Saturday, June 20, the Kidlington Concert Brass band will being playing proms classics such as Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem to a backdrop of fireworks.
Other events include the civic parade on Sunday morning, next month's carnival and the Teddy Bear's Picnic and jazz events in August.
Bicester town councillor Debbie Pickford said: "Ten years ago we just thought it would be nice to have an event in the park for the public. There weren't many places locally that were doing something like this.
"We actually tried to do it many years ago but it never got off the ground. I think people thought it would be a disturbance, but we've proved those fears incorrect.
"And I remember the first one because I was mayor at the time, it went really well indeed. The weather was nice and we had hundreds of people, it was very well attended.
Ms Pickford added: "I like using the park, it's a wonderful setting and I think it is lovely that people bring picnics and enjoy some traditional British music alongside the fireworks.
"It is a very moving and pleasant way to spend an evening."
The morning after the proms the civic parade will see representatives from the Arncott-based 23 Pioneer Regiment march through Market Square followed by local Scouts, Guides, the Air Training Corps and Army Cadets.
The parade marks the first official engagement for the town's new mayor James Porter and follows a service at St Edburg's Church at midday.
The gates open to Garth Park for the Proms at 6.30pm on Saturday, June 20.
Tickets cost £8 for adults, £5 for under-18s and concessions and is free for the under-15s and disabled guests.
