SEVERAL payphones in villages near Bicester are among 22 kiosks to have been earmarked for removal by BT across the Cherwell district.
Payphones in Church Lane, Charlton-on-Otmoor, West End Lane in Merton, Merton Road in Ambrosden, and Crutchmore Crescent in Kirtlington, could be removed under BT plans.

BT has written to the district council asking for views about the planned rem
oval of the payphones, and will take public opinion into consideration before making a final decision.

CDC is now collecting the views of Cherwell residents and members of the council, which will be presented to BT to show whether any of the payphones should be kept.

Bruce Tremayne, chairman of Charlton-on-Otmoor Parish Council, said the removal of the village payphone would be discussed by the parish council at a meeting next week.

He said: "It cannot be used with coins any more because around two years ago BT stopped it. It isn't one of the attractive traditional red phoneboxes and everyone seems to have mobile 'phones these days."

The consultation period is due to end on September 6. Comments are to be sent to Claire Taylor, community planning manager, at Cherwell District Council, Bodicote House, Bodicote, Banbury, OX15 4AA, or by telephoning 01295 221970, or emailing claire.taylor@cherwell-dc.gov.uk
