BICESTER has recently been awarded a silver gilt award in one of Europe's largest horticultural competitions.
The Royal Horticultural Society in Bloom awards ceremony at Chester Racecourse saw representatives from Bicester Town Council and Cherwell District Council win third place in the large towns and small cities category.

The award follows an inspecti
on by judges in July when they visited various parts of the town including Garth Park, Bure Park, Pingle Fields and Sheep Street.

The judges said: "Bicester is well provided with open green space, mature and newly planted trees with considerable sustainable planting throughout.

"Much thought has been given to conservation and recycling initiatives and these were impressive."

Judges also praised the colourful floral displays in the town centre and areas given over to wildlife and conservation which they described as expansive and well-managed.

Cllr Carol Steward is chairman of the town council's In Bloom committee and was presented the award by BBC Two's flying gardener Chris Beardshaw.

She said: "I was very proud that Bicester was there and that our town was being considered alongside some of the most beautiful places in the country."

She thanked everyone involved for all their hard work.
