"SCARY in bits, and really, really brilliant. And I loved the parrot."
Those few words summed up my young daughter's take on Treasure Island after our exciting evening adventure on the high seas, courtesy of The Birmingham Stage Company.
The BSC has brought this brand new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic to the stage at MK Theatre.
And what an enjoyable production it is.
Stage change is minimal but there is clever, versatile use of the set construction - whether depicting a harbour pub, or a ship, or a stockade. The talented 10-strong 'crew' of actors magnificently bring the characters to life, with creative and skilled performances. And their sea-shanty acoustics are a delight.
It's a dramatic production aimed at the family but it doesn't necessarily lower its sights for younger children. Indeed, at times it needs some concentration and as a measure of success, my eight-year-old daughter and her older cousin were thoroughly absorbed in the drama from beginning to end.
It's a fast moving rendition of the classic tale of a thrilling hunt for buried treasure on a desert island, with all its intrigue and mystery, exploring friendship, heroism, betrayal and triumph of good over evil.
I've seen plenty of adaptations, but this one really brought the story to life.
Climb aboard and set sail for a really enjoyable evening.
And look out for that parrot...
Treasure Island is showing at MK Theatre until and including Saturday. Box office: 08700 606652 (bkg fee).
