BUCKINGHAM and Winslow MP John Bercow will have a difficult time ahead of him as the new Speaker of the House of Commons – according to fellow MPs and councillors.
Mr Bercow took up his new position as Speaker last Tuesday following
Monday's secret ballot which saw him receive 322 votes to fellow Conservative Sir George Young's 271 votes.

In the first round of voting, Mr Bercow was up against nine other
candidates including former foreign secretary Margaret Beckett and
Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe.

Following his selection, Bucks County councillor, David Rowlands, welcomed Mr Bercow's appointment, but said it would be a tough job.

He said: "To say the least it is a great honour for the Conservatives in the Buckingham constituency that our MP has been made Speaker of the House, which is a prestigious job.

"As far as I am concerned he will have to be referee, umpire and have the patience of Job and most of all has got to earn the respect of the MPs of all parties."

MP for Brackley and Towcester, Tim Boswell, said: "I am pleased with the recognition Parliament has given my constituency neighbour John Bercow.

"He will have a very difficult but very responsible job at this difficult time."

MP for Bicester, Tony Baldry said: "John was elected by a clear majority of the House of Commons.

"The Commons have put their collective trust in him, and I'm sure he will be an excellent Speaker.

He takes on the role in a particularly difficult time in the life of Parliament and I wish him every success."

But mayor of Buckingham, Cllr Hedley Cadd, said it remained to be seen how Mr Bercow's new responsibilities would affect his work in his
constituency.

He said: "Whether it will affect the members of his constituency, that is a different story. We will have to see what the outcome of that is.

I think we should reserve the right to speak our minds if he doesn't represent us in the proper manner."

A local reader posting on this website, echoed the concerns by saying: "Congrats to our MP but as he will be extra busy with his new post who will look after the constituency?"

Mayor of Winslow, George Langley said: "I am very pleased for him.
"I think he deserves it because he is an extremely hardworking MP and
does an awful lot of work in his
constituency."
