Bercow wins second ballot

BUCKINGHAM and Winslow MP John Bercow has won the second round of voting in the election for the next Speaker of the House of Commons.

He won votes from 221 MPs ahead of Sir George Young with 174 votes.

Former Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett received 70 votes, deputy speaker Sir Alan Haselhurst has 57, while Liberal Democrat Sir Alan Beith has 46.

Ann Widdecombe was eliminated after receiving 30 votes.
