THE Betsey Wynne pub in Swanbourne raised around £800 with its very first sheep race on Sunday.

Sheep from the pub's own flock had prepared for the big day under the expert eye of villager Caroline Baldwin, and a tote and commentator added to the authenticity.

The animals, with monikers such as Minty and Mutton Chops, each carried a teddy bear jockey on their backs as they raced to be the first to a bucket of feed.

Betsey Wynne manager Jo Mutton said the event had been a great success, with an outdoor bar, stalls, a barbecue and other refreshments available.

"We're going to double the size of it next year," she said.
Architect Adrian Hoy from Swanbourne, pictured above, volunteered his services as commentator on the day. All cash raised from the event will go towards the cost of a new heating system at the village church.
