WOOLWORTHS, which has branches in Buckingham and Bicester, has reported that its customers have saved over 170,000 carrier bags in the first two weeks of trial.
The company has introduced a 3p charge for carrier bags and 19 stores across the two counties, including the Buckingham store, are taking part.
Stewart Giles, who is area manager, said: "The trial is designed to reduce waste and our impact on the environment. I'm delighted to say that it is already working and achieving results beyond our expectations."
The 3p from those charged goes to Woolworths' charity, Woolworths Kids First. The charity is using the money to help fund its Playgrounds Partnership Scheme.
It is hoped that the store chain can use the results and learnings from the trial to implement a national policy on carrier bag usage in its 821 stores.
