Here are club reports for week commencing November 7...
Buckingham Canal Society
THE Buckingham Canal Society celebrated the restoration of Hyde Lane Lock on Sunday, October 12 with 43 people in attendance.
There is still further work to be done on the lock and this will be completed by our volunteers.
We run three work parties a month on alternate Thursdays and the second Sunday of each month and always welcome new volunteers. If any Buckingham resident has any old photos of the lock and can give us any information or stories about the Buckingham canal this would be much appreciated.
Please email info@buckinghamcanal.org.uk or ring 01908 661217.

Buckingham Acoustic Club
FRASER was in charge at our recent meeting, giving us a lively opening with Ain't Misbehavin', a self-penned number and Day Tripper.
He was then joined by Mike on bass, and Craig, who added some superb harmonica to numbers like Roll Over Beethoven and It's All Over Now. Mike, swapping guitars, continued solo with a varied set ranging from Dylan's Knocking On Heaven's Door through Guy Clark's Flour Sack Cape, with some classic Searchers from the sixties.
The duo Wychwood, (www.myspace.com/wychwoodmusic) played a set of self-penned numbers, before finishing with the lovely Sandy Denny classic, Who Knows Where The Time Goes?
There were plenty in the New Inn this evening to join in the choruses with Christine as she played some well-known songs – Streets Of London and Last Thing On My Mind. We were then delighted to have a newcomer to the club, Sarah, accompanying herself on guitar, give some truly great renditions of Kiss Me by Sixpence None The Richer, Bryan Adams' Back To Love and Katy Tunstall's Hold On and Funny Man.
Martin, also accompanying himself on guitar, then brought us a complete change of style, with My Daddy Was A Bank Robber by The Clash and Plastic Jesus by Billy Idol.
To round off the evening we were treated to Dave's lovely singing with some classic numbers like Can I Stay and Route 66, finishing with a medley of Sweet Baby James, May You Never and Light My Fire.

Lenborough Singers
OUR Christmas Concerts will be on Sunday, December 7. The afternoon one will be held at the Radcliffe Centre, Buckingham, at 2.30pm and the evening one at the Holy Trinity Church, Gawcott, at 7.30pm.
Tickets for either concert will be £5 for adults, £3 for children, or a family ticket for £12. These will be available from choir members, The Duke's Music and The Old Gaol.
We would encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance as it was standing room only for our last concert.
Each year we support different charities at our concerts and this year the afternoon concert will support the Old Gaol Appeal and the evening one will support the Holy Trinity Church Development Fund.

North Bucks Carers
IT was a full session on October 22, at Buckingham Community Centre, at the North Bucks Carers' social morning.
Sharon Ferris, the therapist from Wishing Well, was offering free mini beauty and relaxation treatments to carers and Eislish was in charge of refreshments.
Buckingham WI popped in with their regular cake contribution too.
This WI group has supported the NB Carers since we first started up nearly six years ago providing a cake once a month and popping in at intervals to catch up with both carers and volunteers.
We also welcomed Connie Sharp of CarersBucks who reported that her bid to the AVDC Community Chest fund had been unsuccessful but that she was now hoping for better results in a second bid.
The Coffee Morning at NBC volunteer Patti Bateman's lovely home recently raised £95.50, and Margo expressed her gratitude to all the volunteers, carers and friends who were part of this event.
Val Nevard did her usual expert selling and raised £23 in the raffle on Wednesday, meaning that in October the raffle has brought us in nearly £45!
Well done Val!Fred Matthews of the Royal British Legion was on hand to answer issues from carers on a wide range of topics.
We were due to go to MK College restaurant on December 3 for a Christmas lunch special but as they are fully booked that day we have re-booked for Wednesday, December 10.
There will not be a Carers Social Morning that day as the following week we are holding our own Christmas Party at the Community Centre.
Carol has booked 30 places to the MK College lunch (£12.50) so please let her know if you would like to go by calling 01280 815512.
Next month, Betsy is due to lead a session on Humorous Verse, when previous speakers the Rev Paul Wigfield and wife Cicely will come and bring their own contributions too.
If you are an unpaid carer helping a loved one lead as independent a life as possible through personal care then maybe you would like to come along to our friendly and fun social mornings held twice a month at Buckingham.
They are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 10am to 12.30pm.
Or you can go to Winslow at the RBL Club in Elmfields on the first Wednesday of the month from 10am to noon.
Take some well-deserved time out for yourself.
If you feel you cannot leave the person you care for, then bring them along too, although the emphasis will always be on the carers.
Confidential advice, people to listen to you, others who really understand the problems and anxieties you feel with all your caring responsibilities, and friendship and fun.
All helped down with delicious cakes and never-ending tea or coffee – and all for free!
Just call Margo on 01280 817420 for more information.

National Childbirth Trust
A BABY Massage event is being held today, Friday, at the National Childbirth Trust coffee morning from 10am to 11.30am, entrance £3.50, at Buckingham Community Centre.
Tomorrow, Saturday, we are holding a Nearly New Sale open to the public from 10.30am to noon (for NCT members with a valid membership the event opens at 10.15am).
Future events include Usborne Books on November 14, Baby Photography on November 21, and Pottery on December 5 and 12, all being held in Buckingham Community Centre at the NCT Friday coffee mornings.

Inner Wheel of Buckingham
THE fascinating history of the success story of The British Curry Company was revealed by Patricia Forbes at the October dinner meeting.
The company was started at Patricia's kitchen table with her friend eight years ago.
All of the recipes used have been handed down from Patricia's grandmother and were originally taken to many fayres around England.
As larger quantities began to sell, Patricia and her friend Maria decided that they could no longer continue to produce them at home, so a manufacturer was sought and found in Birmingham.
The company has grown from strength to strength after meetings with supermarket owners, travelling around the world and cooking for panels of buyers.
The company now exports its wares to 13 countries including India and has recently won a contract with Waitrose to sell all 10 of their products.
Much hard work, a passion and belief in their product and persistence has given this local business the success they deserve.
You can purchase the products from Clays the butchers and Waitrose in Buckingham.
We are hoping soon to have a cookery lesson from Patricia.

Buckingham Memory Cafe
THE Aylesbury & Buckingham Alzheimer's Society is looking forward to welcoming Gwen Coleman from the Society's National Office to the next Memory Cafe on Thursday, November 13.
Gwen is project co-ordinator for the Food For Thought project and is coming to talk to us about how food can become a pleasure instead of a concern for carers and people with memory problems.
The Memory Cafe is held on the second Thursday of each month at the Well Street Centre, Buckingham, from 2pm to 4pm, and carers, former carers, people with memory problems and friends and family are all welcome.
For further information please call 01296 331722.

Swan and Pen Literary Society
THE Swan and Pen Literary Society welcomes Paul Burns who will be talking about Translating Spanish Poetry.
This will take place in the Sunley Lecture Theatre, University of Buckingham, Chandos Road Building, on Monday, November 10 at 7.30pm.
Paul Burns inherited a love of Spanish from his parents who were both born in South America.
He read Spanish and French at Oxford and spent most of his professional life in religious publishing, translating many theological works along the way.
A bi-lingual edition of the poems of St John of the Cross led to a suggestion from his co-translator that a selection of Antonio Machado's poems should be considered.
This eventually materialised, a publisher was found and even earned a prestigious commendation.
The Chilean Nobel prize winner, Gabriela Mistral, was chosen as the next subject.
The translations published as bi-lingual texts aim to be faithful to the letter and spirit of the originals while also being recognisable as English Verse.
Whether these two aims can successfully be kept in balance is for readers and listeners to judge: at least they will be introduced to two fine poets and great human beings.
The talk is open to non-members of the society.
For more information on the Swan and Pen please ring Pat Phillips on 01280 821191.

Adstock and Padbury Garden Club
THE club will be meeting at the newly-refurbished village hall in Adstock at 8pm on Tuesday, November 11.
Our speaker will be Paul Farnell who is the head gardener at Waddesdon Manor.
We look forward to hearing about gardening on the grand scale and, perhaps, learning what is planned for the parterre in 2009.
Visitors will be very welcome to join us at this meeting.

The Film Place
THE Film Place is showing Hancock (12A) today, Friday, at 8pm.
Tomorrow, Saturday, at 5.30pm, there is a special screening of Housewives Choice, British Women on the 'Home' Front, 1926-1955. Films can be seen at the Ian Fairbairn Lecture Hall, Chandos Road Building, University of Buckingham.

Ardley and Fewcott Gardening Club
Our next meeting takes place at the Community Hall, Ardley, on Wednesday, November 12 at 7.30pm.
Our guest speaker is Peter Sheasby whose talk, with slides, is entitled British Wild Flowers.
The evening will include refreshments, and a raffle will also take place.
Admission, members £1 and guests £2.
A bingo and supper evening is being held at the Fox and Hounds on Friday, December 5 at 7.30pm.
For tickets contact Jean McGarry on 01869 345581.
Due to a cancellation, we have a double/twin room available for next year's trip to France and the Gardens of Normandy.
We will be travelling by coach on Monday, April 20, returning on Friday, April 24. Garden visits to include Claude Monet's, Clos Du Courdray, Champs de Bataille and Les Jardins d'Angelique.
The visit will also include, on the return journey home, a visit to the Chateau de Cocove for lunch and wine tasting.
Contact Jean McGarry on 01869 345581 for more details.
There will be no club meeting in January 2009.
The next outing will be to Cadburys' Garden Centre, near Bristol, on Sunday, February 22, 2009, £10 each.
To reserve a seat, a £5 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking.

Cherwell Cats Protection
TOMORROW, Saturday, the Cherwell Cats Protection will be holding its fourth bazaar in the Methodist Hall, Sheep Street, Bicester, open from 9.30am until noon.
The Mayor of Bicester will be present to formally open the proceedings at 10.30am and to welcome all visitors.
The cat-themed fundraising event will cater for children of all ages with face painting, as well as having a variety of stalls with cakes, books, bric-a-brac and toys.
There will also be a 'drop-in basket' for cat food donations.

FOLLOWING the successful and seemingly well-received run of our last play, Dangerous Corner, we should like to thank the Advertiser and Review for their interest and help in bringing the event to everyone's attention.
Thanks are also due to the following for their much-appreciated assistance: The University of Buckingham for invaluable rehearsal accommodation; Paragon Tool Hire for their generous loan of valuable equipment; Painted & Pine in the Barn at Bridge Street Stores, PSP Auctions – Tingewick, Dragon Reclamations, and Nicola Holloway for their contributions to the set; Busiprint, Buckingham Tourist Information Centre at the Old Gaol, Buckingham School, and Admiral Costumes in Newton Longville for their various services; and not forgetting all the backstage crew.

The society's AGM will take place on Wednesday, November 12 from 8pm in the Radcliffe Centre. All are welcome.

Old Gaol Museum
A GOOD day was had by all last Saturday at the annual craft fair, when more than 420 people came and enjoyed a free tour of the museum, the varied craft stalls and the cake stall organised by the Friends of the Museum.
Continuing raising funds for B.I.G. (Buckingham's Improving Gaol) the next event is on Wednesday, November 12, when you can join in the fun with an Old Fashioned Games Night starting at 7.30pm in the museum.
Tickets, including light refreshments, are £5, and can be bought at the Tourist Information Centre, Buckingham.
The last of the autumn talks arranged by the Buckingham Heritage Trust takes place on Thursday, November 20 at 7.30pm at the University of Buckingham's Ian Fairbairn Lecture Hall in Chandos Road.
The speaker is Bill Gallagher, writer and executive producer of the BBC's production of Lark Rise To Candleford.
Bill will be explaining how he interpreted Flora Thompson's book to the small screen.
This is an autumn talk that has been eagerly awaited. Tickets, at £5, are available now from the Tourist Information Centre in the Old Gaol, Buckingham. Refreshments will be available.
For more details of these two events look at our website www.mkheritage.co.uk/ogb or telephone 01280 823020.
