Banbury & District Model Railway Club
DESPITE signals being at caution last year, when the club thought it was going to lose its annual exhibition site, a revised timetable has seen us through a successful year with no hold-ups due to engineering works.
At the annual general meeting held last week in the club's Bloxham Engine Shed, the chairman, John Scales, reported all was running to time and no major hold-ups were forecast for the upcoming year.
Thanks are due to our committee for their work during the year and to everyone else who had turned to the meeting in such poor weather.
Officers elected for the coming year were: chairman, John Scales; vice-chairman, Graham Bell; exhibition man, Rod Maguire; secretary, Keith Bristow; treasurer, Jim Browne; and committee, David Robinson and Malcolm Smith.
Last year we had a successful partnership with Chiltern Railways at the NEC National Model Railway Exhibition, providing them with a model train on which we ran Chiltern Trains. This year Chiltern have sponsored us for our annual show at Banbury School on Sunday, September 28 and we will once again collaborate with them at the NEC National Exhibition on November 22 and 23.
Our own exhibition is coming up very fast and, following the debriefing, we will be in talks with Banbury Community Church with a view to continuing with the same arrangement next year.
Our Christmas dinner will be at The Joiners Arms, Bloxham, on Tuesday, December 16.
We are always looking for new members, the club meets weekly in Bloxham and anyone who wishes to know more can ring Keith Bristow on 01295 252931.

Twyford & Charndon WI
THE Institute met, after the August break, in Twyford Village Hall.
Creative juices were set flowing as Sheila Ward had us all watercolour painting.
There was a great deal of amusement and we learnt a lot.
When all was finished the results were judged for our monthly competition, with Anne Watts first, Lyn Eastman second and Edie Hubbard third.
We all enjoyed our summer garden meeting at Lyn Eastman's home although, due to the weather, our time was spent indoors.
Nevertheless, there were some very entertaining competitions and a good sum was raised for our charity.
Our next meeting is at Twyford Village Hall on Wednesday, October 8 at 7.30pm when Mr L Woodley will talk on 'Murders in the 19th Century.' Visitors welcome. which are fortnightly at 8pm on Wednesdays in the Lounge, Villiers Hotel, Buckingham.
Forthcoming meetings are October 1 and 15.

North Bucks Beekeepers
THE annual Honey Show will be held at Wyevale Garden Centre, Newport Road, Wavendon, MK17 8UF tomorrow, Saturday, and Sunday.
Local honey and bee products for sale.
Members will be on hand to answer your questions.

Winslow & District Arts Society
WE are looking forward to seeing old and new friends after the summer break and believe they will be keen to learn about the diverse and interesting programme of monthly demonstrations we have in store for them.
On Thursday, September 25 we hold our annual general meeting at 7pm at the Winslow Centre, when the committee will present the end-of-year review of activities and financial statement.
The programme for the coming year will be presented as well as details of proposed WADAS exhibitions.
The AGM will be followed at 7.30pm by a demonstration by Ian Risely of how to paint a 'Portrait of a Dog' in pastels.
The monthly informal workshops held in Padbury recommenced yesterday, Thursday, and today, Friday, between 10am and 3pm.
These are open to any full WADAS member.
The first outing of the new programme will be on Wednesday, October 8 to the British Museum to see 'Hadrian: Empire and Conflict'.
Another wonderful exhibition which explores the life of Hadrian, the 14th emperor of Rome, a successful military general also regarded as a man of learning and culture.
A unique opportunity to see treasures from 31 museums from around the world and finds from recent excavations in southern Turkey which provide a new insight into the character, life and legacy of Hadrian, through the cultural side of his rule and his impact on the architectural landscape of Europe.
To learn more about WADAS – our monthly meetings, visits to exhibitions and informal workshops – please call the secretary, Alicia Vaux, on 01280 813733 or visit our web site on: www.freewebs.com/bucksart.

Maids Moreton WI
OUR meeting on Wednesday, September 10 was the first after the summer break, so there was lots of business to catch up on and dates and reminders of various future events, such as:
October 4 – Scarecrow Day in Maids Moreton – now an annual event.
October 16 – The group meeting, 7pm at Buckingham Community Centre. A fun evening to include a quiz/speaker and fish and chip supper, £6.50 (or £2 without food).
October 23 – BFWI half-yearly council meeting at the Civic Centre, Aylesbury.
October 25 – Scanna Appeal in Maids Moreton Village Hall, 10am to noon. Any cake makers/helpers welcomed.
October 27 – Eat, Think and Be Healthy, Winslow Public Hall, 7.30pm.
Full details of the above can be obtained from any committee member.
The WI refreshment stall at the Church Fete raised £168.
Some members helped with the collections outside Tesco in aid of Willen Hospice. A letter of thanks had been received, £2,066.16 had been collected – a great achievement.
Renee Watts provided our entertainment on the evening.
She played guitar and sang some old and new tunes.
Members were given a variety of shakers, castanets, drumsticks etc and were invited to sing along and provide background rhythm in their own inimitable way.
It was great fun and good to share some of Renee's philosophies of life in general.
Please note the next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 15 and not October 8 as detailed in the programme.
This will be the annual meeting where a new committee will be voted in.
The competition will be 'a holiday souvenir'.

The Film Place
THE Film Place is screening Caramel (15) today, Friday, at 8pm and tomorrow, Saturday, at 7.30pm at the Ian Fairbairn Lecture Hall, Chandos Road Building, University of Buckingham.
It is a French/Lebanese film with sub-titles, telling the story of a strong-willed woman who runs a hair and beauty salon in downtown Beirut with two assistants.
Into this cosy salon, customers come as much for a chance to chat and dream as to have their hair done.
We learn of romantic attachments, their hopes and aspirations and we follow the little incidences of everyday life that characterise the existence of these feisty Lebanese ladies.

Brackley European Association
TWENTY members will board a coach today, Friday, for a twinning visit to our German friends in Montabaur.
The Association had hoped to travel by train from St Pancras, but the eventual fare quoted by the rail company proved prohibitive, plus the cost of a coach to and from London.
However, the warm welcome awaiting in Germany will definitely help mitigate the longer trans-Europe ride.
When the intrepid group returns on Monday, September 22, they have only a few days before our next meeting on Thursday, September 25 which will be combined with Jazz and Curry in the Lower Town Hall, Brackley, from 7.30pm onwards.
Anyone interested can come along and we promise that any BEA business will be kept to the minimum as we like to eat, chat and relax listening to the music.
Looking ahead, we have booked the Lower Town Hall, Brackley, for Saturday, November 25, for a coffee morning and table top sale from 9am until 2pm.
Ten tables in all, five for ourselves and five to let out to local charities or other interested groups.
For more information about Brackley European Association and its activities ring Keith on 01295 252931 or come along and meet us at our Jazz and Curry event on the 25th – you're assured of a warm welcome.

Buckingham Canal Society
VOLUNTEERS have been working for some time to clear Hyde Lane Lock, last used in 1932.
Following a significant grant from Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN, the body which distributes landfill funding from Waste Recycling Group Ltd), Pauley Construction was employed over the summer to restore the brickwork of the lock.
This work has now been successfully completed and the Society is to hold a celebration to mark this important step towards restoring this heritage feature.
Please join the Society on the afternoon of Sunday, October 12 to view progress, to witness the unveiling of a fourth Buckingham Canal interpretation board (funded by Milton Keynes Heritage Association) which will be sited at the lock, and to raise a glass in celebration.
Hyde Lane Lock is located in the Buckingham Canal Nature Reserve, owned by Berks, Beds & Oxon Wildlife Trust.
On the A422 about 1.7 miles from Buckingham, opposite the brown sign which marks the entrance to Winslow at Foscote Market, there is a farm gate which will be identified 'Buckingham Canal Society', giving access to car parking by kind permission of Buckingham & District Angling Association.
Please note that arrival will only be between 2pm and 2.20pm, after which the parking gate will be locked until departure, except for emergencies.
It is approximately a half-mile walk from the car park, past the beautiful Hyde Lane Reservoir and along the cleared towpath to the lock.
Some of the path is uneven and may be muddy so please wear comfortable walking shoes.
We regret that the path is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs and may not be suitable for people with mobility difficulties.
In addition to those organisations identified above, we would like to acknowledge the support of the following donors to this project: Milton Keynes branch of Inland Waterways Association; Northampton branch of Inland Waterways Association; Buckingham Town Council; Nikon Optical UK Ltd; Abbey; and HBOS Bank, Aylesbury.

Buckingham & District RBL
THE next branch meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 23 when the guest speaker will be Flt Lt Tim Barlow from RAF Halton.
A group from RAF Halton are restoring one of the prisoner-of-war buildings at Stalag Luft 3 in Poland, the camp featured in the film 'The Great Escape'.
The talk and slide presentation will show how the work is proceeding.
All are welcome to attend, commencing at 7.30pm.
On October 18, John Bercow MP will be unveiling the recently restored World War I war memorial in Akeley at 11am.
Following a short service and gun salute by World War I re-enactors, light refreshments will be available in the village hall.
The launch for this year's Poppy Appeal is at the Old Gaol, Buckingham, on Tuesday, October 21, 11am.
New volunteers are always welcome.
At the July meeting Major David Spencer gave a detailed presentation on the history of the National Lifeboat Institute.
New members and friends welcome.
Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday each month at Buckingham Town Football Club, Ford Street, 7.30pm.

Padbury WI
DEBBIE Forrest, our president, opened the meeting, welcoming all members and guests.
The subject of the talk by Susannah Marshall was Poetry/Prose with Dolls.
The talk was researched information about Georgina Spencer who was born in 1757 and died 1806.
Lady Spencer married the Duke of Devonshire when she was 17, and the similarities with Princess Diana were amazing.
Susannah filled our evening with minor details she had researched about life during that period and it was indeed fascinating.
Padbury WI has been asked to provide teas and cakes at Padbury Fete tomorrow, Saturday.
The Walking Group is meeting on October 2, starting at 2pm from the village hall.
Visitors are always welcome, £2.
If you are interested in joining our group and would like further information, please telephone Debbie Forrest on 01280 813846 or our secretary Pat Reilly on 01280 823576.

Winslow Concert Band
THE Winslow Concert Band was delighted to be joined by local vocalists Paul French and Pam Worley, who sang a variety of popular songs, for their concert on September 13.
There was a special guest appearance by jazz clarinet virtuoso Terry Lightfoot, who treated an enthusiastic audience to his own version of the Hoagy Carmichael classic Stardust.
Paul French's charismatic Tribute to Elvis and the finale Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You got the crowd clapping and singing along.
The band is now preparing for its programme of Christmas events – details are on the website www.winslowconcertband.co.uk.
If you play a woodwind or brass instrument and would be interested in joining, they normally practice every Thursday evening at Winslow Public Hall. Details are on the website, or ring Alison Cockroft on 01525 758178.
