Book gives fresh insight into Lark Rise to Candleford

editorial image

A new book giving readers a fresh insight into the world of Lark Rise to Candleford author Flora Thompson is now available.

The book, More Tales from Lark Rise, was produced in draft form by Thompson’s younger sister Ethel, known as Betty.

Thompson was born in Juniper Hill, and spent time working in a post office in Fringford.

Her younger sister’s book also records memories of childhood, but covers a period 10 years later, in the 1890s.

Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee is mentioned, as are many details of the parish of Cottisford and its residents.

Many of the conversations are recorded in local dialect.

The new book, which has been brought to publication by descendant Henry Westbury, is not yet on general release, but copies can be found in Cole’s Books in Bicester, the Old Hall Bookshop in Brackley, and the Old Gaol in Buckingham.

The book is priced £9.99.
