Brackley Hospital plans ‘imminent’

DOCTORS and investors are preparing to submit plans for a replacement to Brackley’s Cottage Hospital.

Although the current Cottage Hospital is much loved by town residents, parts of the grade II listed building are Victorian, making it difficult to modernise, while Pebble Lane, in Brackley’s old town, is narrow and has limited parking.

The cottage hospital currently has nine intermediate care beds which allows residents to recover close to family and friends from surgery carried out elsewhere.

Under the proposals two of Brackley’s GP surgeries will also move into the new campus on the Network 401 development off Northampton Road, alongside a dentist, care home and consulting rooms. Springfield Surgery will not be moving.

In 1995 the Cottage Hospital Trust formed the Core Development Group (CDG) in partnership with the GPs in the town to develop a replacement for the hospital.

Dr Charles Perrott of Brackley Health Centre is the lead clinician in the CDG.

He said the town was already benefitting from an ultrasound unit acquired to equip the new health campus and hopes future diagnostic services will include a mobile X-ray and MRI scanner.

He added: “I attended the public exhibition at the town hall a couple of months ago and it all looked very exciting and it will be a good development for Brackley. Our patients have been very supportive throughout.”

Brackley estate agent George Britchfield is current chairman of the Cottage Hospital Trust, and was the mayor of Brackley 22 years ago when the trust was launched following an announcement by the district health authority they were withdrawing funding.

He said: “It is very exciting, the whole scheme of things, in terms of internal layout and accommodation requirements for the surgeries, has been done.

“This is absolutely massive. We have never got this close before and I can’t see any reason why this is not going to progress to a very satisfying and pleasing conclusion.”

Nick Gillard of Brackley Investments, which is an investor and developer for the project, said: “The planning application is being prepared, it hasn’t been submitted, but that is imminent. I can’t say a particular date because some of the technical information required to underpin the application is being prepared by various people with specialist knowledge in things like highways and traffic.

“It will go in as soon as it is ready. It was due to be just before Christmas but we’re just working on a small redesign.”
