Community radio show makes waves in Bicester

A GROUP of young people  invited shoppers to record  radio broadcasts inside Bicester’s Crown Walk shopping centre on Wednesday last week.

Members of the public were invited to take part in game shows, share their wisdom and even make jingles by young DJs from Bicester’s Spare Moment internet radio station, who had taken over an empty shop unit as part of an event organised by OYAP Trust.

The show can be heard on the Spare Moment website from noon onwards this Sunday, September 2.

Ross Arrowsmith, 16, from Arncott, started the radio station with friends Stevie Bulford, Daron Coker and Sam Isaacs.

He said: “It was a little bit difficult to persuade some of the people to come in, but the people we did interview gave us some really good stuff.”

The Spare Moment crew also invited up-and-coming Bicester band The Method to come in to record a number of songs, which can be heard on Sunday.

Ross, who aims to follow a  career in broadcasting, said Spare Moment hoped to be able to start using a studio space at The Courtyard in Launton Road over the next few weeks.

Laura Hamlet, project co-ordinator for the OYAP Trust, said: “They’ve been extremely active and used their own initiative.

“It’s great that there’s young people out there doing things like this off their own backs.”
