Staff from Southern Electric Power Distribution will brave icy conditions to help save birds at RSPB Otmoor near Bicester.

At times of poor visibility, geese and swans have been flying into an overhead power line at the nature reserve, causing injury or death.

Bright tags are now being installed on overhead power lines by Southern Electric Power Distribution (SEPD) to prevent bird fatalities.

RSPB Otmoor spokesman Owain Hegarty said: “We are thrilled to be working together with Southern Electric Power Distribution – it has been terribly sad to witness such unnecessary deaths and we hope this initiative will put an end to more fatal collisions.”

Tags make overhead power lines more visible and greatly reduce the numbers of fatal bird collisions.

Both sides will reflect the sun and moonlight, and the tags will also spin in the wind.

David Ashbolt, from SEPD’s Oxford depot, said: “We are pleased to be able to support the RSPB and implement a simple initiative that will help birds avoid the lines and tackle the problem.

“It will be a happy day to see no fatalities or lines down.”
