Details of major changes to Bicester town centre roads

A major £1.3m congestion-busting revamp of town centre routes will begin at the end of the month, it was announced this week.

Details have been released by Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) ahead of the work, which is due to start at 6am on Sunday, March 31.

OCC deputy leader Rodney Rose said: “The changes due to come into being at the end of the month are a key part of the overall scheme, and should make a positive impact on journeys made into Bicester town.

“In the meantime we want to make sure as many people as possible are aware of what is happening so they are ready for the changes.” I look forward to the completion of the rest of the work and to an improved situation for everyone who uses these busy roads – especially during the rush hour.”

Work will be carried out at key junctions to speed up journey times and improve access for motorists, buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

Access to North Street and Roman Way from the Five Ways roundabout, at the junctions of the Banbury and Buckingham roads, will be closed off under the scheme.

Two-way traffic on St John’s Street and North Street, which are currently one-way, will also be introduced.

Traffic signals at the junction of Field Street and St John’s Street be replaced with a new mini-roundabout, and a new roundabout will be installed at the junction of Manorsfield Road and St John’s Street.

Vehicles will be able to turn right out of Bucknell Road towards the town centre, but will be stopped from turning right into Bucknell Road from Field Street.

Leaflets are set to be delivered to households across Bicester to make residents aware of the changes.
