Electric racers to light up Silverstone Circuit

STUDENT teams are gearing up to take on professional engineers in this year’s Greenpower Corporate Challenge at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday.

The annual event, organised by The Greenpower Education Trust, challenges corporate professionals to design, build and race an electric car against the top youth teams in the country.

The Corporate Challenge allows business to get involved with the Greenpower initiative, which encourages young people to get involved in sustainable engineering careers.

Some of the biggest names in the motoring world, including Jaguar Land Rover and Peugeot Citroen, will once again battle it out in a four-hour endurance race against the best school teams.

The event promises to be another exciting race, with 2011 runners-up The Silesian University of Technology returning from Poland to prove themselves after narrowly missing out to Sussex-based company Electroad.

Other youth teams to watch out for include the all-girls team from Sandbach High School, who are known for their consistently good performances, and 2011 national final winners Chipping Sodbury School.

Silverstone Circuit is the major sponsor of the event, and managing director Richard Phillips will be starting the 2012 Corporate Challenge at 1.30pm.

This year’s prizes will be presented by Erik Fairbairn, CEO of Pod Point, provider of electric vehicle charging points.

Members of the public are welcome to watch the race for free, and there will be plenty to see and do including exhibitions from Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley Motors, Pod Point and more.

The Greenpower Education Trust runs 27 annual events and works with more than 500 schools across the UK.
