CHAMPIONS of the rural environment celebrated a milestone and boosted Bicester’s green lungs with the planting of 80 saplings this month.

The Oxfordshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) celebrated its 80th anniversary with the planting of a copse as part of the Kingsmere development to the south west of the town. The land was provided by Countryside Properties (Bicester) Limited and the planting forms part of its extensive landscaping design for the new community.

Bruce Tremayne, chairman of CPRE Bicester, said it was a fitting tribute to eight decades of work protecting the landscape and added: “The copse is a small contribution to a natural barrier, helping to protect the surrounding villages as Bicester itself expands.”

The trees were planted by Nicholsons of North Aston, and are all native species including oak, ash, field maple and lime.

Mr Tremayne thanked both firms and added: “We would also encourage anyone interested in protecting the countryside and communities around Bicester to get in touch with CPRE. We have many volunteering opportunities and projects that we would love to have help with.”
