‘Grotty lay-by is not good look for town’

A new lay-by on the southern approach to Bicester is becoming choked with rubbish including human waste, a town councillor said this week.

Councillor Les Sibley has called for action over the lay-by on the A41, including the installation of new lighting and more police visits.

Mr Sibley said: “It’s pretty obvious it’s being used as a dumping ground for all sorts of waste, some of it quite unsavoury.

“It’s very dark down there at night, and the vegetation is being damaged, including some new trees that have been broken.

“This is a gateway into Bicester, and I think it’s important we keep it clean.

“It’s the introduction to Bicester and it ought to be our pride and joy.”

Mr Sibley said the site appeared to be becoming increasingly popular with motorists including lorry drivers, who often park up for overnight stays.

He added: “It’s pretty obvious what’s happening because there’s lots of bottles with the tops cut off.

“It’s awful, and you can smell it when you come up here.

“It’s shocking when you think it’s only been in use for a short amount of time.”

Mr Sibley said more lights to make the lay-by more visible at night would be a good start.

Litter bins could also help, Mr Sibley said, but he feared the move could make the unofficial roadside dormitory even more unsightly if left unattended.

“Hopefully people would respect the bins, but I’ve got a funny feeling that if they’re not emptied regularly the problem could get even worse,” he said.
