HMP Bullingdon among the best for safe custody
HMP Bullingdon has one of the best records in the country for preventing suicides among prisoners, latest figures show.
Details released in the Ministry of Justice’s new Safety in Custody report show there was one suicide out of a population of 1,081 last year – a rate of 0.93 per 1,000.
Bedford Prison had the highest rate last year, with four suicides out of 465 prisoners – a rate of 8.6 per 1,000.
The lowest rate was at HMP Altcourse near Liverpool, with one suicide out of 1,173 prisoners last year.
Most of those who committed suicide in custody were white men aged between 21 and 49. Roughly 35 per cent were on remand, and around 23 per cent were not from the UK.
The number of suicides across prisons in England and Wales has fallen over the last ten years, from 95 cases in 2002 to 57 in 2011.
