A Bicester businessman who lost his sight 10 years ago has launched a new company giving young people with disabilities a chance to enjoy adrenaline-fuelled activities.

The new firm iCAN Experiences – launched by Paul Nicol, 34, from Fair Close – gives young disabled people the chance to try activities such as wind tunnel skydiving, white-water rafting, archery, and working with birds of prey.

Married father-of-one Mr Nicol, who was registered blind by the age of 23, said: “There are plenty of exciting activities open to people with disabilities, but I know from experience that you can spend many hours trying to work out what’s possible and what’s not.

“iCAN Experiences takes the hassle away because I’ve done the research myself. It opens up a world of activities for people with disabilities that they may previously have ruled out.”

Last summer Mr Nicol climbed Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Following his trip, he began creating his new company with support from employment advisors at Action for Blind People.

Mr Nicol said: “Action for Blind People’s employment advisors gave me important tips and advice; with their support I was confident I could succeed on what would become an incredible personal adventure.

He added: “When Action for Blind People told me about their clubs for youngsters with sight loss – Actionnaires – and how the social and sporting opportunities help build confidence and independence, I had to team up with them.

“This is precisely why I set up iCAN Experiences; to make a difference to young people with disabilities.”

Mr Nicol recently sponsored a group of Actionnaires to take part in an indoor skydiving session at a centre near Bedford.
