Join in a May Day tradition by making a May Garland

BUCKINGHAM Town Council is asking people to take part in a traditional May Day celebration by making a May garland.

Traditional May garlands were made by children out of greenery and flowers that had been collected.

In many English villages children would parade with garlands of flowers around the village, sometimes fastened on sticks or in the shape of a hoop.

Sadly, this year Buckingham Town Council has not been able to get any Maypole dancers to perform at the town’s May Day celebrations.

So as an alternative, the council is asking everyone to take part in making a May garland and taking it to the paved area outside the Old Gaol on Saturday, May 5, to be judged.

The judging, by town mayor Mike Smith, will take place at 11am and a prize will be given to the best garland.
