A Buckingham rower is in training for a fundraising cross-channel row at the end of April.

Alice Draper, aged 24, is taking part in the MK Channel Row, to raise money for the MK Dons Sports and Education Trust (SET) and the Milton Keynes Rowing Club.

Miss Draper, who got the rowing bug while a student at Cambridge, has been a member of the rowing club for the last six years.

She said: “It’s a very sociable sport – you’re all in a boat together and you’ve all got to do the same thing. Milton Keynes is a very friendly club. I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Two ocean-going rowing boats, with rowers from MK Dons SET and the rowing club, will be attempting the 22-mile journey from Dover across the English Channel to France, expected to take between four and six hours.

Miss Draper’s all-women boat will be trying to break the record for the fastest crossing for a women’s boat.

Miss Draper, who attended the Royal Latin School and now works as a lab technician there, hopes the cross-channel row will raise much-needed funds for the club, and she hopes local businesses will get on board and sponsor them.

She said: “With the Olympics last year, we had a huge amount of interest in the rowing club but we don’t have the facilities to accommodate them. So we want to buy more training boats and train coaches so we can run more Learn To Row courses.

“At the moment during a training session, every single boat goes out and we’ve still got people stood on the shore who can’t get on the water.”

The rowing club will be fundraising at a family fun day at stadium:mk tomorrow, Saturday, from noon to 2.45pm.

People can attempt to ‘Beat The Rower’ on the rowing machines and the club will also have a cake stall.
