Plans to keep Winslow Library open with help from a group of volunteers appear to be moving forward this week.

Although the scheme has yet to be approved by councillors, indications from officers have been positive so far, says the chairman of the Friends of Winslow Library, Guy Hawking.

Mr Hawking said: “When we made the proposal in December we were advised it looked interesting, but it would need consideration and discussion.

“Officers have now looked at it, particularly people in the library service, and they have agreed with it in principle.

“It will go to a meeting, not before the end of February, where cabinet members will have to make a decision.”

Mr Hawking said the Friends were planning to meet with Bucks County Council later this month to discuss the next steps.

He added: “We’ve come to a meeting of minds on a way we can work with the library service, rather than being set free on our own.

“Wherever possible we’ll be using the library service’s resources – such as the book stock and the computer system – but will be providing some more manpower to supplement the reduced level of staff.”

Residents were invited to take over running some smaller facilities as ‘community libraries’ early in 2011.

The Friends Of Winslow Library aim to retain the services of one professional librarian, assisted by a team of volunteers, which should save the county council about £20,000 a year.

Bucks County Council would continue to own and manage the building at the Winslow Centre.
