NW Bicester eco-town is raring to go

WORK will soon start on Bicester’s largest housing development to date after the North West Bicester eco-town cleared its final hurdle last week.

Work is set to start on the initial 393-home phase later this year. The eco-town could eventually include up to 5,000 homes.

The first phase had been granted planning permission by Cherwell District Council (CDC) in August last year, pending the signing of a legal agreement over investment in infrastructure.

Councillor Michael Gibbard, CDC’s lead member for planning, said: “We have made sure that the first exemplar phase of development at NW Bicester will set the scene for what follows.

“We are proud that the scheme will include many unique features to reduce the impact of the new development on the environment.

“We have put our money where our mouth is to guarantee that infrastructure is delivered along with housing rather than afterwards.”

North West Bicester is due to be the first eco-town scheme in the country to get off the ground since the government-backed housebuilding programme was unveiled in 2007.

The site of the first phase borders Caversfield on the northern edge of town.
