Rail bridge is to be ‘infilled’
Motorists who have endured the nuisance of temporary traffic lights in Helmdon for more than a year might be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
When Northants County Council resurfaced Station Road in 2011 they discovered the bridge over the now disused Great Central main railway line was damaged.
Temporary lights were put in place making the main road in and out of the village a single lane over the bridge to stop two large vehicles crossing at the same time and exceeding a reduced weight restriction.
A consultation on a planning application to ‘infill’ the arches of the bridge has now come to an end and work could start this year. The process will see the arches filled from top to bottom with a variety of materials to ensure strength and drainage.
Repairing the bridge or replacing it were considered too costly for a bridge over a disused rail line. The work will see more than 400 lorries carrying materials to and from the site over a four week period. Andrew Grant, NCC’s member for Helmdon said negotiations had been complex.
