Victorian attitudes to leisure and the changing face of popular entertainment will be examined at the next meeting of Bicester Local History Society on Monday, January 21.

From 7.30pm onwards, speaker John Chaplin will give a talk entitled The Birth of Leisure 1800-1900, exploring how activities changed over the century and how Victorian tastes influenced how people spent their spare time.

February will bring a talk on custom and ritual in 19th Century Oxfordshire, while March’s meeting will focus on the surprising lack of excavations of medieval blacksmiths’ workshops.

Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month in the society’s new venue, the Clifton Centre in Ashdene Road. The venue is in King’s End next to The Centurion at the junction of Kingsclere Road and Ashdene Road.

Non-Bicester Local History Society members are welcome to attend meetings at a cost of £2. Contact Pete Chivers on 01869 600109 for details.
