VILLAGERS in Little Horwood are looking into the possibility of buying their village pub.
Little Horwood’s only remaining pub, the Shoulder Of Mutton, has been put up for sale by its owners, Oxford Hotels and Inns, and is on the market for an asking price of £400,000.
The village’s other pub, the Old Crown, closed in 2008 and is now a house.
The Grade II-listed Shoulder Of Mutton, in Church Street comes with a beer garden, a large car park and two paddocks.
A public meeting in December was attended by 60 villagers and a project group, called the Shoulder Of Mutton Villagers Group, was set up to look into the possibility of taking on the pub.
Chairman Frank Donlon told the Advertiser the 10-strong group had the necessary business, financial and technical skills to evaluate the project.
He said the three options for purchasing the pub would be a syndicate of private buyers or a community purchase either as a private company or some sort of social enterprise. The group is also hoping to be eligible for some sort of grant funding.
Mr Donlon added that, ironically, under the care of temporary manager Annette Buckler, the pub has never been so busy.
The group will present the results of its feasibility study to a second public meeting in mid-March.
Mr Donlon said: “If we do decide to go ahead with it, I’m confident we will be successful with it. We’re that kind of village.”
