THE Lions Club of Winslow would like to thank everyone who supported us in and around the town in 2008 and wish you all a very happy new year.
We hope to see you again at the 10km Run on Sunday, February 22, at the annual Winslow Beer Festival on March 20 and 21, the Winslow Show in August, the Fireworks Night in November and at the Carols in the Square.
It is through these major events
that we raise the bulk of our money, all of which is given away to very worthy causes.
We recorded our most successful year in 2008 by raising more than £20,000 and gave away £18,500 with a number of pledges still outstanding.
We gave to many worthy causes connected with cancer care, Alzheimer's, sight recovery and water purification projects in many countries.
However, the bulk of our donations go to local organisations and individuals.
Given that we had a major focus on youth in 2007/8, we did a great deal to advance the causes of young people in and around Winslow.
Furze Down School has been a major beneficiary where we are donating £5,000, have helped to build pathways, clean out the pond and constructed fences and gates.
The Scouts have benefited by new fencing around their HQ, the Guides and Brownies have a new water heater amongst other things and the two play schools and Winslow Combined School have now got new outdoor equipment.
We were also really pleased to help the Puzzle Tree School at Middle Claydon to provide a new play room for the fantastic work that it does with young children.
Also, the Winslow Youth and Padbury Youth Clubs were given funds to buy new equipment.
These are only a few of the projects we have been involved in.
This year we are majoring on the elderly which got a kick start through the many Christmas parcels we handed out to provide a bit of cheer over the festive period, and a large flat screen TV to the residents of Swan House.
If any of our readers and supporters know of any deserving causes then please let us know by telephoning Peter Wood on 01296 712041.
