SUMMER holidays are looming, and those aiming to make a splash by the poolside can choose from dozens of activities to get in shape.
Leisure centres in Buckingham, Brackley and Towcester offer classes ranging from gentle aqua aerobics to high-repetition weight training, catering for most abilities and ages.

Jane Doe from Towcester Centre for Leisure said: "Many leisure centres offer an aqua aerobics or aqua fitness class, which help improve fitness and tone while supporting muscles and joints.

Cardiovascular boxercise or body combat workouts based on boxing and kick-boxing techniques are also increasingly popular. Non-contact kicking and punching exercises, together with controlled breathing, allow all-over toning and strength-building in addition to increased fitness.

If pummeling an imaginary opponent is not your cup of tea, classes such as Pilates and Yoga can improve posture and muscle tone in a more peaceful environment. Stress relief and relaxation, both linked to successful weight loss, are also associated benefits.

For those with no time to waste, circuit training can be an intensive way of shifting flab and shaping muscles. Classes commonly offer a variety of strength and tone-building exercises for the whole body.
Studio cycling or 'spin' classes can be another high-intensity way to lose weight, although most bikes have resistance settings suitable for beginners.

Women-only classes and sessions exclusively for groups including children and over-50s can also be found. And for those who dread being cooped up, outdoor conservation activities are becoming an increasingly popular way of keeping in trim. National conservation charity BTCV operates a 'green gym' in Bicester and arranges walks and other regular activities in the Buckingham area.
