Ensemble performs rare Holy Week music

The Eisanach Ensemble

The Eisanach Ensemble

The Eisenach Ensemble is performing a concert for Holy Week at 7.30pm on Saturday, March 30, in St Peter and St Paul’s Church, in Buckingham, with soprano soloists Cate McKee and Angela Hicks.

Lamentations Of Jeremiah are musical settings for the liturgical Tenebrae, taken from the Old Testament, which are celebrated on the three days preceding Easter.

The text describes Jeremiah deploring the destruction of Jerusalem by the Baylonians, symbolising Christ’s loneliness and betrayal by Judas.

The music is French baroque, dating from the 1690s, and is particularly unusual in that much of it is not printed or available to the general public.

The ensemble is presenting a selection of Lamentations by two eminent French baroque composers, Couperin and Charpentier.

The singers are accompanied by a small ensemble of period insturments, exactly as scored for the original performances in Paris.

Tickets £8 from the church office or on the door.
