A golden opportunity - or a cruel sport?

From Brian Taylor, The South Northamptonshire Leisure Trust

I read with interest the article on The Ascot of the Greyhound World which covered the possible greyhound stadium at Towcester Racecourse.

It never ceases to amaze me how people locally seem too often first focus on the negative.

To me this project would give another first class leisure facility to Towcester and give a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Yes there are some obstacles to be overcome but I’m sure Kevin Ackerman and his team will address these in consultation with relevant parties.

While it’s a personal view at this stage as chairman of The South Northamptonshire Leisure Trust I want to get 100% behind this project which can only be an advantage to Towcester.

From Caryn Wood, board of directors, GREY2K USA

I am writing in response to your January 24 article, Dog Track Plan At Towcester Racecourse.

If a greyhound racetrack were to be constructed at Towcester, certain attendees would have nothing to celebrate. The greyhounds could risk injury and death while racing.

I believe that greyhound racing is cruel.

I believe that in some cases greyhounds live in nearly endless confinement, they suffer racing injuries such as broken legs, broken necks, paralysis, and death by cardiac arrest.

Even the fastest greyhounds are valued only as long as they are generating a profit for their owners.

Their post-racing fate falls to volunteer groups that work tirelessly to rescue and place for adoption as many greyhounds as they can.

Yet, according to the RSPCA, United Kingdom greyhounds that are injured or not fast enough disappear at the rate of 20 per day.

I ask readers to consider this information before placing wagers that would subsidise a cruel industry.

I respectfully urge South Northants Council to consider that dogs deserve to be protected from industries that cause them harm.

I have personally adopted gentle, loyal, retired greyhounds since 1997, and I am a member of the board of directors of GREY2K USA, a national non-profit organisation that works to end the cruelty of dog racing.
