Roll up, roll up: Brace yourself for fun at town’s Charter Fair

HISTORY repeats itself when Buckingham’s annual Charter Fair rolls into town again next weekend.

Buckingham’s historic Royal Charters give the townspeople both the Tuesday and Saturday Markets and the Charter Fair, which has been visiting Buckingham for more than 450 years.

The town’s first charter to hold the annual market or fair, was given by Mary I in 1554 and the second charter was given by Charles II in 1658.

The charter was only granted to the town to hold fairs on a Saturday and not any other day.

Nowadays, the fair arrives on Friday to set up, and leaves early on the Sunday morning. It then returns the following weekend.

Mayor of Buckingham Mike Smith will declare the fair open, with the help of the town crier, at 1pm on Saturday , October 15.

And for or the first hour, free rides provided by the showman, Nichols Amusements, will be available to local disabled children.

In the past, local organisations such as Riding For The Disabled, Furze Down School, Mencap and Clearly Speaking have benefited from the free rides. This year many local groups including YC2, Bucks Association for the Blind, Options and Clearly Speaking have been contacted in advance in advance to offer them tickets for the free rides.

Parents and carers of disabled children who would like tickets and have not already been contacted should contact Buckingham Town Council within the next week on 01280 816426.

As in previous years, Buckingham Town Council will work with the police and showmen to bring the fair into the town at about 10.30am on Friday, October 14.

A road closure will be in place on Market Hill, Market Square and the High Street from 6am but traffic movements will be monitored until the first of the showmen arrive.

Roads will be closed until midday on Sunday, October 16, and from 6am on Friday, October 21, to midday on Sunday, October 23.
