THE sights and sounds of the Sixties are filling Milton Keynes Theatre this week with the manic, technicolour show All You Need Is Love.
It's a blisteringly fast romp through the decade, with the cast belting out more than 60 – yes that's right, 60! – hits, from everyone from The Beatles to The Everly Brothers.

But the high-energy format, which consists purely of the singers and dancers performing medleys of hits, with no back story, and no narrative, left me feeling like I'd been whacked on the head with someone's 'Stars on 45' collection.

I was longing for an over the top tale - Mamma Mia or We Will Rock You-style - where the fun comes from seeing how outrageously the songs are shoe-horned in to fit a cheesy plot. The music-only structure is just overkill, and actually lessons the impact of many of the timeless songs, which were often performed at an irritatingly high tempo in order to keep the medley racing along at an unnecessarily breakneck speed.

To give the cast their dues, the show does feature some talented and versatile singers and dancers, who tackle a whole range of styles, from close harmony singing to rock, pop, psychedelia and soul, with boundless energy and enthusiasm.

But it was really only on the rare occasions when the pace slowed and the performers were given the chance to deliver a song in its entirety - notably a powerful solo version of You Don't Have To Say You Love Me – that the show made any sort of emotional connection.

All You Need Is Love is showing at Milton Keynes Theatre until Saturday. Performances at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee at 4pm.

Box Office: 0870 060 6652 (booking fee applies). For more details click on www.miltonkeynestheatre.com
