Cricket: Evenley bounce back with win

EVENLEY made up for last week's defeat with a win at home to Woodford Halse in the South Northants Cricket League Premier Division on Saturday.
Title holders Evenley batted first in the rain affected match, posting 183-4. Anthony Romaine hit 67 and Dave Holden 62.

In reply Halse made 125-9, Romaine grabbing three wickets and captain Julian Walker two. The game was reduced to 40 overs, Evenley winning by virtue of their faster scoring rate.

Unbeaten Syresham's match away at Byfield was rained off.

In the M & P Scott (Builders)Division One, Thornborough lost narrowly to Wootton at home by 31 runs. Wootton batted first and made 164-9, Keith Finson scoring 59. Tom North took a handy 3-31.

In reply Thornborough were dismissed for 133, Ian Chapman topscoring with 38, Phil Lewis hitting 26.

Silverstone's game at home to Preston Capes was abandoned due to rain.

In the New England Financial Services Division Two, Hinton-in-the Hedges beat Greens Norton by eight wickets. Hinton posted 141-2, Steve Cone hitting an unbeaten 39. Norton were dismissed for 140-9, Mark Mounsdon grabbing 4-24 and Richard Wills 3-47.

Gayton ran out winners against Croughton by 48 runs. Gayton were 181 all out, compared to Croughton's 133-7. Stuart McDermott hit 59 for and Barry Vincent 49 for Gayton as Ross Atkins grabbed 4-26 and Ian Skuce 3-26. Toby Drayton notched 3-27 for Gayton.

Evenley A went down by 41 runs to Hanslope. Evenley were dismissed for 63 as Craig Woolley took 6-21 and Will Griffin 3-5. Hanslope made 104 all out.

Gawcott & Hillesden's game against Sibford was abandoned after 28 overs due to rain.

In Division Three, leaders Finmere continued their impressive form with a narrow 18-run win over Boddington. Finmere posted 136-9, with Keith Carpenter stroking an unbeaten 51. Boddington were all out for 118 as Andy Coe grabbed 4-38 and Iain Tipper 3-24.

Preston Bissett lost to Wroxton by 40 runs, the latter posting 114 compared to Wroxton's 154-8. Matt Collins topscored with 41 for Preston as Talib Hussain took 4-38.

Paul Stairs hit a sparkling 79 not out for Maids Moreton as they were four-wicket winners over Bodicote A. Moreton posted 134-6, while Bodicote were skittled out for 132. Stairs also took 3-43 and Ford Driscoll-Gibb 4-26.

In the Division Three KO Cup Preston Bissett beat Finmere by 69 runs. Matt Collins stroked a fine 74 for Preston in their total of 137-5. Finmere made 68-7, Tommy Coe hitting 23.

Syresham A enjoyed a six-wicket success over Flecknoe. The latter were dismissed for 81, Nic Parry notching 5-12 and Nathan Archer 2-9. Syresham reached 84-4.

Division Four leaders Charlton suffered a 10-wicket defeat to Marston A. Marston's Martin Sirot-Smith hit 74 not out as they posted 152 in a game reduced to 29 overs. Charlton made 151-4, Darren Wyatt scoring 59.

Helmdon were winners by just a single run against Middleton Cheney in Division Five. Geoff Bridger sparkled with 58 not out in Helmdon's total of 145-8. Cheney were dismissed for 144, Bridger taking 4-35 and Alex Blanchard 3-32.

Silverstone A ran out winners by six wickets over Brackley. Andy Devonshire grabbed 5-25 as Brackley were skittled out for 50. Steve Corns took 3-15 for Silverstone.

  • Apologies to Finmere Cricket Club for an incorrect score in last week's report of their match against Willoughby A. Finmere beat Willoughby by eight runs and did not lose to them by the same score as we reported. Iain Tipper took 6-24 as Willoughby were dismissed for 141, compared to Finmere's 149.
