WESTBURY moved within 16 points of league leaders Tetsworth with a 91-run win against Shrivenham last Saturday.
Shrivenham won the toss and put Westbury in on a good wicket but with very blustery conditions.

Mark Styles (19) was the first to go, bowled by Howe with the score on 47. This saw big hitter Tom Boardman join Rae at the crease and this pair pushe
d the score on to 101 when a change of bowling brought about the end of Boardman (38) as he was bowled by youth player Taylor.

It was Taylor again who took a top quality catch to dismiss Wilson (25) closely followed by the big wicket of Ben Rae who holed out while on 73. Simon Boardman (21) and Richard Tredwell (15) helped the total on to 233-9.

Shrivenham found the going tough with some fine controlled bowling from Westbury's openers Rae and Wilkes limiting the scoring chances and frustrating the batsmen.

Shrivenham's best batsmen on the day were Whale (43) and Crowder (27). Once Whale fell to wily spinner Tredwell the heart went out of the opposition with only Crowder prepared to go after the runs.

Loggin dismissed the tail enders and ended with figures of 2-2. Under-15s bowler Jordan Ayris was economic as well taking 2-15. Tredwell and Rae also took two apiece limiting Shrivenham to 142-9, 91 short of their target.

  • Sunday saw Shrivenham make the long journey to Westbury again as they fought it out for a place in the prestigious Airey Cup final.

  • Westbury won the toss and elected to bat on a cracking wicket where the ball was coming on to the bat superbly.

Rae and Styles opened again and set off at a faster rate than the previous day, Styles was the first to go with what Westbury adjudged to be a dubious catch, feeling that the ball had bounced before reaching the fielder. Then Rae hit Taylor for for fours in one over. But the next ball stopped on him and he offered an easy caught and bowled which led to celebration in the Shrivenham camp.

Youth player Michael Platts-Martin hit a quick 36 when he strayed out of his crease once too often and was stumped by Pearsey. Skipper Tredwell batted sensibly for his 37 and was supported by Simon Boardman (36). Alex Walters had another classy innings going in at number 8 scoring 31. Westbury amassed 235 all out in 44 overs leaving a healthy target for Shrivenham to chase.

Shrivenham started slowly not looking as though they had the confidence they could reach a large target. When their star batsman Whale went relatively cheaply, run out needlessly on 37, it looked game over.

However captain Lloyd came in at number 4 and immediately took control stroking the ball around for 54 before he too was run out. The lower order batsmen Pearsey and Howe both hit 19 runs each, but none of the opposition could really pressure Shrivenham ending their innings on 184, 51 runs short.

Rae, Tredwell and Ayris took two wickets each to secure victory and a place in August's final against Tetsworth.

This weekend sees the 1st team away at Marcham for a 2pm start.
l Westbury II moved to the top of the table as they continued their unbeaten run with a three-wicket win against Garsington II, thanks to a fine all round performance from skipper Neil Wilkins.

Batting first Garsington failed to cope with Dan Hopkins (2-23) and Neil Wilkins (2-27). Michael Platts-Martin then took 2-12, while veteran spinner Ron Ridgway grabbed 3-18 to finish off the innings. In reply skipper Wilkins (33 not out) steered his side to victory, finishing the match with a huge six over the square leg boundary.
